Why is cigarette smoking addictive?

Cigarette smoke contains over 4,000 chemicals with nicotine being the primary addictive component. With each cigarette smoked, you absorb approximately 1 to 2 mg of nicotine into your body, which directly stimulates your adrenal glands and results in secretion of epinephrine; also known as an adrenaline rush or an “endorphin rush”.

This rush stimulates your body and causes an increase in blood pressure, respiration, and heart rate. Nicotine also causes the release of dopamine in the brain, which is a chemical responsible for sensations of pleasure.

The release of dopamine causes you to experience a sense of euphoria following nicotine exposure, which is similar in ways to the effects of other psychoactive and addictive drugs like cocaine and heroin. Repeated exposure to nicotine results in the development of tolerance, where higher doses of nicotine are required to produce the same stimulating effects.

When craving a cigarette, your body is literally sending out signals of endorphin rush and dopamine euphoria needs to your mind. These needs are directly related to your nicotine addiction, as if you did not have nicotine in your system, you would not feel the cravings.

Each time you concede to your cravings and smoke a cigarette, you further enhance the addictive powers of nicotine by extending its control over your body and mind.
