Back Pain

There is a high probability that you, or someone you know, is currently suffering from “back pain”. More than likely it is low back pain, as this affects nearly two thirds of the population at some point during their lifetime. Low back pain is the fifth most common symptom for which patients visit physicians, with approximately one quarter of adults reporting low back pain lasting at least 1 day in the past 3 months.

The news isn’t all bad, as the majority of low back pain cases typically improve rapidly in the first month. Up to one third of patients however report persistent back pain of at least moderate intensity one year following an acute episode and 1 in 5 report substantial limitations in activity. Low back pain has obvious lifestyle and financial burdens and when it is accompanied by radiation of pain and numbness in the lower extremities, it can be truly debilitating. This condition is the result of a Lumbar Disc Herniation.  A painful disc herniation results when a tear allows the migration of the nucleus pulposus (protrusion), causing nerve root irritation in the spine.

LLLT from LaserIntervention is now used in the treatment of low back pain, and has been very effective in the short and mid-term treatment of lumbar disk herniations. This pain-free, non-surgical approach works by stimulating the body’s natural healing processes, providing pain relief and reducing injury damage. This leading edge technology has an impressive success rate of returning patients to work, sports and competition activities, as well as everyday life. Patients treated often show a higher level of function both during and after the treatment period.

Through the action of photo-bio-stimulation of light reactive biological receptors (chromophores) in the body, Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) has demonstrated the ability to significantly accelerate and enhance the body’s natural defense and repair components in the presence of injury, inflammation and certain disease processes. Low Level Laser Therapy is also effective in providing pain relief by stimulating the production of endorphins. By modifying the effects and limiting the duration of inflammation, as well as enhancing specific repair and healing processes, LLLT is consistent in providing pain relief, reduced inflammation, reduced injury damage and restoring loss of function. Additionally, Low Level Laser Therapy is able to facilitate more rapid cellular repair and stronger healed tissue structures. Multiple clinical studies have noted the following results of LLLT. Inflammation, swelling and the concentration of pain-producing chemicals in our body are reduced naturally. Laser therapy also improves blood flow to joints and influences cartilage regeneration.
